(Vienna, 20 August 2024) New space for research is being created south of the main building at the joint site of University Hospital Vienna and MedUni Vienna. One of the major projects is the construction of the Center for Translational Medicine (CTM), which will be directly connected to the main building via a bridge. Assembly of the bridge construction began last week.
Once completed, the entire structure will weigh around 70 to 75 tons. 400 components, which in turn consist of 800 individual parts, will be bolted together on site with 2,000 bolted connections.
The special feature of the bridge construction is its dimensions. It extends over two storeys, which means that the bridge cannot be delivered in one piece.
The first stage, the assembly of the connecting girders and the trusses, has now been completed. The bridge and façade should be completed by the end of December 2024.
With more than 14,000 m2 of floor space, the new Center for Translational Medicine will create modern conditions for research and teaching. The connecting bridge between the research building and the main building reflects the core objective of the new Center for Translational Medicine: the connection between basic research, applied research and patient care.
The new Center for Translational Medicine
The new center follows the concept of translational medicine "from bench to bedside and back". This means that new findings from basic research reach patients as quickly as possible. Conversely, the researchers at MedUni Vienna take into account the experience and knowledge gained from patient care at University Hospital Vienna when researching and developing diagnostics and therapies. The new center will act as a hub for several basic sciences and university clinics of Vienna General Hospital and MedUni Vienna. Core facilities will provide easy access to state-of-the-art high-end equipment and cutting-edge technologies.
After activation, data will be sent to YouTube. Further information here: Data protection
