Center for Translational Medicine

Medizinische Universität Wien

Address:
MedUni Campus AKH, Lazarettgasse, south of the main building

Funding:
Federal Government and City of Vienna

Start of planning:
2020

Costs:
Total investment of around €120 million

Partners/Sponsors:
Joint framework construction contract between the Federal Government and the City of Vienna

Start of construction:
2023

Completion:
2026

Floor space:
approx. 14,000 m² of floor space,
of which approx. 11,700 m² is for research
and approx. 2,300 m² for teaching

The new centre follows the concept of translational medicine: “From the laboratory to the bedside and back to the laboratory” (“from bench to bedside and back”). This means that new findings from basic research reach patients as quickly as possible. Conversely, researchers at MedUni Vienna incorporate the experience and knowledge gained from patient care at University Hospital Vienna into the research and development of diagnostics and therapies.

The aim is to link basic science with clinical practice and jointly develop new research and clinical trial projects. To this end, the centre will bring together a seamless chain from experimental laboratory testing to Phase I/II clinical research within a single building.

The new centre will serve as a hub for several basic science disciplines and university clinics at University Hospital Vienna and MedUni Vienna. Core facilities will provide easy access to state-of-the-art high-end equipment and cutting-edge technologies.

In addition to office and laboratory space, there will not only be a GMP facility for cell therapy, radiopharmacy and biologicals, core facilities, an animal facility with preclinical imaging and a biobank, but also a clinical centre for Phase I and II trials, complete with a patient ward.

This highly efficient infrastructure will enable new research findings to be incorporated into therapies (for example, for cardiovascular and immunological diseases as well as cancers) as quickly as possible, and will facilitate the development of modern diagnostics and innovative therapeutic strategies.

This will further advance personalised medicine.

14,000 m² for conferences, laboratories and clinical trials

Of the approximately 14,000 m2 of floor space, two levels of the new Center for Translational Medicine will be accessible to the public via the main entrance. These two levels house a large conference area with individual rooms of varying sizes that can be combined in a modular fashion, an open gallery serving as a workspace and library area at the heart of further teaching rooms, and a cafeteria. The upper floors house office and laboratory spaces, staff rooms, and the clinical Phase I/II centre with patient rooms.

The new research areas will also serve as a local bridge between teaching, laboratory and clinical practice: they are situated on the axis between the University Hospital Vienna (AKH) and MedUni Vienna’s major construction project, the MedUni Campus Mariannengasse, where previously scattered pre-clinical facilities are being consolidated and a new, modern learning environment for students is being created.

The centre comprises:

  • Clinical Phase I/II Centre (22+12 beds)
  • Core Facilities, Screening Platform, Biobank (2130 m2)
  • Bioinformatics (600 m2)
  • GMP Unit – Radiopharmacy
  • GMP Unit – Biologics (840 m2)
  • GMP Unit – Cell Therapy
  • GLP toxicology laboratories (in vitro & in vivo)
  • Mouse facility (including imaging & germ-free)
  • Project-specific research areas (3,200 m2)
  • Meeting and seminar rooms
  • Communication and interaction rooms
  • Lecture theatre & seminar rooms (750 + 630 people)
